The flashback arrestor is designed to prevent the backflash of a flame through the torch into the hoses and regulators which can cause the torch and hoses to explode and can cause severe operator injuries. They are a mandatory requirement to be fitted to both torch and to the regulator on both fuel and oxygen lines.
The Australian standard AS4839-2001 (“The safe use of portable and mobile oxy-fuel gas systems.”) calls for the use of flashback arrestors (see Clause 7.3). Due to this standard, flashback arrestors are a mandatory requirement according to Health and Safety Authorities in Australia.
