The Core Changes: WES to WEL

How Exposure Limits Are Measured

The new limits rely on three types of exposure measurements:

Peak Limitation: This captures the maximum or peak concentration of an airborne contaminant measured over the shortest time possible, not exceeding 15 minutes.

  • Manganese: 98% reduction
  • Cadmium: 90% reduction
  • Beryllium: 99.99% reduction
  • Chromium VI: 100% reduction, now classified as a Non-Threshold Genotoxic Carcinogen (NTGC)

New Standards for Fume Extraction

National requirements for the design and operation of fume extractors have been introduced under AS/NZS ISO 21904 Standards. These standards went into effect in March 2026.

Fume extraction systems must demonstrate:

  • 99% or greater filtration efficiency for welding fume (W3 rating)
  • Verified performance of the entire device, not just the filter media
  • Airflow monitoring with warnings and alarms
  • Safe filter handling and dust management
  • Minimum capture velocities and validated torch/hood performance

This is about proving your extraction works, not just having equipment on site.
